Video - Building A Mini Greenhouse Cheaply

This short video demonstrates how to build a mini greenhouse right over parts of your existing garden. It's great for protecting plants in your organic garden into the fall and even winter months. It can be used as a season extender for your veggies, or even for winter gardening or an early spring start to your garden in February or March. This is probably one of the cheapest greenhouses you can build - each part will only cost a couple of dollars, and you can protect quite a few plants with each greenhouse.

Check it out!

Video - Growing Potatoes In A Bucket

This is a great way to grow your own potatoes, no matter where you live or what time of year it is! You can also put the buckets outside and grow them outdoors during the summer if you live in a condo or apartment and don't have room for an outdoor garden. But you can easily move them indoors or into the greenhouse in the winter and grow potatoes year-round.  In this video, the first potato example was planted in February, so you can see how well it has grown even during the colder months.

We won't be posting next week, as we'll be traveling and spending Christmas with family, but be sure to check back after the holidays for more year-round organic gardening tips and more! I'll try to post some pics of how my indoor plants are doing as well - they're looking quite lovely right now. 'Til then, enjoy your holidays, and be safe, warm, and well!

Video - How to Rotate Your Crops

This video gives you a good overview of how to design a sustainable garden rotation plan. (You may want to view it full-size, as he does a bit of drawing and typing of crop names.) You can draw this out on paper, and just keep a garden ledger - rotating beds in sequence each year like he describes is very helpful, as it's easier to keep track of, and you can plant crops which will benefit from coming after the previous crop. This works well even in very small gardens - especially if you can do multiple succession plantings throughout the year, although you may need to add additional compost or organic fertilizers if you're gardening a small area heavily.

Video - Testing Your Garden Soil's pH Levels

In this short video, Patti the Garden Girl shows you how to test the pH of your garden soil. Different plants and shrubs need different levels of acidity or alkalinity. The majority of plants prefer a fairly neutral pH level, but some have different requirements, so you'll want to test your soil before planting to make sure it has the correct levels for optimal growth of your crops. Soil pH testers are inexpensive and easy to find, and some indicator plants can also give you an idea of whether you have alkaline or acid soil (hydrangeas, for example, will have different color blossoms based on whether your soil is acidic or alkaline).

Video - Organic Gardening in Raised Beds

This quick video explains why raised bed gardening is so helpful for your organic garden, from creating great soil to controlling weeds and maintaining soil moisture. Raised beds also can offer easier harvesting of your yummy organic veggies. You can create raised beds simply as he demonstrates in the video, or design a more lasting structure from planks (be sure to use untreated wood, as wood treated with chemicals can leach into your soil!), or stones, concrete blocks, or other materials.
